SEC and Regulatory Filings
SEC
The U.S. government agency that oversees securities markets and enforces related laws.
Also called: Securities and Exchange Commission
What it means
SEC stands for the Securities and Exchange Commission. It is the main U.S. regulator for public securities markets. The SEC requires many public disclosures, enforces certain rules, and works to protect investors and maintain fair markets. It does not guarantee that an investment is safe or that fraud will never happen.
Why it matters
Beginners hear “filed with the SEC” often. Understanding the SEC helps users interpret public company filings and the limits of regulation.
