The difference between the current bid price and ask price.

What it means
The bid-ask spread is the gap between what buyers are willing to pay and what sellers are asking. In very active markets the spread is often small. In less active markets it can be wider.
Why it matters
A wider spread can make trading more expensive in practice, especially for less liquid investments.
